Finance & Accounting resume examples

Finance resumes are judged on accuracy and on the size of what you were trusted with. Reviewers look for the value of budgets, portfolios or close cycles you owned, the standards you worked under, and whether you have the qualification the role names. Precision in how you write is itself part of the audition.

4 examples in finance & accounting

What reviewers in finance & accounting look at first

  • The size of what you handled: budget value, portfolio size, transaction volume, headcount reporting to you.

  • Standards and frameworks by name — GAAP, IFRS, SOX — because they are screened for literally.

  • Qualification status stated plainly, including part-qualified with the stage you have reached.

What costs people interviews here

  • Rounding away the numbers that make the role sound significant.

  • Leaving qualification progress vague when employers filter on it directly.

  • A typo. In this field it reads as a comment on your attention to detail.

How finance & accounting hiring actually works

Finance hiring is qualification-gated and conservative. Recruiters filter first on qualification status — qualified, part-qualified, or studying — and then on the size and type of the entity you have worked with, because a month-end close for a small business and one for a listed group are different jobs with the same title. Larger firms run structured applicant tracking software; boutiques and practices frequently read by hand. Accuracy of the document itself is assessed as evidence, which is not true in most other fields.

What a finance & accounting resume should look like

One page early, two at most later, single column, no decoration. Lead with qualification and the scale of what you have handled: turnover, ledger size, portfolio value. Name the systems — SAP, Oracle, Xero, Sage — because they are screened on directly. Then give outcomes with numbers, which this field expects more than any other. Proofread twice: in a discipline built on precision, a typo in a resume claiming attention to detail is read as a straightforward contradiction.

How it changes with experience

Part-qualified candidates should state their stage and expected completion date plainly, since employers plan study support around it. Mid-career, the emphasis moves from processes performed to judgements made — variances explained, controls introduced, audits passed. At senior level, lead with the size of what you were responsible for and the decisions that followed from your analysis, not with the reporting cycle itself.

Finance & Accounting resume questions

Can I put figures from my employer's accounts on a finance resume?

Use the scale, not the secrets. Ledger size, portfolio value, budget owned, close duration, transaction volume and audit outcomes are the shape of the job and are almost never confidential in themselves. What does not belong is anything unpublished and specific — margin by product, a client's balance, an unannounced result. If you would hesitate to say it in an interview, leave it off.

Which certifications actually matter on a finance resume?

The ones that gate the work you are applying for. CA, CPA and ACCA are close to prerequisites in audit and controllership; CFA carries weight in investment roles and little elsewhere; NISM and IRDAI certifications are required to sell specific products. A certificate that gates nothing in the advert is worth one line, not a section.

How do I show audit and compliance work on a resume?

By outcome. Audits cleared with no adverse observation, findings raised and accepted, controls you designed that changed a process, inspections passed. Compliance work is easy to describe as a list of frameworks and hard to describe as achievement, which is why most finance resumes list the frameworks — and why the ones that name outcomes stand out immediately.
