Financial Analyst resume example

A financial analyst resume is judged on the size of what you modelled and whether anyone made a decision because of it. Reviewers see a great deal of "built financial models" and very little about what those models changed. Name the decision.

Summary example

Financial analyst with 5 years supporting a $340M business unit. Built the driver-based forecasting model now used for quarterly planning, cutting forecast variance from 12% to 4%, and led the analysis behind a facility consolidation that saved $2.1M annually.

Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.

Bullet points that work

Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.

  • Built the driver-based forecast model for a $340M business unit, cutting variance from 12% to 4%.
  • Led the financial analysis behind a two-site consolidation, delivering $2.1M in annual savings.
  • Automated the monthly reporting pack in Power BI, reducing preparation from 5 days to 6 hours.

  • Partnered with 4 department heads on annual budgets totalling $90M.

Tips specific to this role

  1. 1

Name the size of what you supported. "$340M business unit" places you; "large business unit" does not.

  2. 2

Tie every model to a decision. A model nobody used is not an achievement.

  3. 3

Say how far your Excel goes. "Advanced" is meaningless — name the functions or the model type.

Mistakes to avoid on a financial analyst resume

  • Modelling with no decision attached. "Built a three-statement model" is a task; the reader wants the investment, the pricing change or the cut that followed.

  • No mention of what you analysed. Revenue of $5M and $5B require different work with the same job title.

  • Excel listed as a skill without depth. Everyone claims it — say what you have actually built, whether that is a driver-based forecast or a DCF you defended.

  • Omitting the systems. Anaplan, Hyperion, SAP and NetSuite each imply a different scale of finance function.

How the summary changes with experience

The same role, written two ways. Take whichever is closer to where you are now.

Entry level

Financial analyst with a finance degree and 18 months in FP&A for a $60M consumer business. Owns the monthly variance pack and rebuilt the headcount model in Excel, cutting the forecast cycle from nine days to four. CFA Level I passed.

Senior

Senior FP&A manager with 11 years, CFA charterholder, supporting a $1.2B business unit. Owns the annual operating plan and the driver-based forecast in Anaplan, and built the unit-economics analysis that led to exiting two unprofitable product lines.

Certifications worth listing

Put these in their own section with the awarding body and, where one applies, the expiry date.

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) – Levels I–III
  • Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Questions

What should a financial analyst put on a resume?

Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: financial analysis, financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis.

How do I prove analytical ability rather than claim it?

Name a model you own, the decision it drove, and how accurate it turned out to be. Forecast accuracy is unusual in being checkable after the fact, which makes it the most persuasive number on a financial analyst resume.

Is FP&A experience interchangeable with investment analysis?

No, and conflating them weakens you for both. FP&A is internal planning, budgeting and variance; investment analysis is valuation and allocation. Lead with the one the advert describes and present the other as adjacent, not equivalent.
