Auditor resume example
Audit resumes are read for the standards you worked to, the size of the entities you audited and how much of the file you owned. Reviewers can tell instantly whether someone ran a section or ran the audit, so be precise about which.

Summary example
Audit senior with 5 years in external audit, running fieldwork on engagements up to $400M in revenue. Led teams of 4 across 9 engagements, and identified a revenue recognition misstatement of $3.2M that had passed two prior-year reviews.
Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.
Bullet points that work
Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.
- Ran fieldwork on 9 external audit engagements with client revenue up to $400M.
- Identified a $3.2M revenue recognition misstatement missed in two prior-year audits.
- Led audit teams of 4, reviewing their working papers and coaching two through first-time sections.
- Cut average fieldwork duration by 15% by rebuilding the sampling approach for testing controls.
- Documented and tested internal controls across 6 cycles under SOX requirements.
- Presented findings to audit committees at 3 clients, including two adverse control findings.
Tips specific to this role
- 1
Name the standards. GAAP, IFRS and SOX are searched for as exact strings.
- 2
Say what you owned: a section, the fieldwork, or the engagement. Reviewers read the difference immediately.
- 3
Give client size in revenue. It is how audit firms judge whether your experience transfers.
Mistakes to avoid on an auditor resume
-
No mention of the framework. Internal audit, external audit, SOX, ISO and financial statement audit are distinct disciplines.
-
Findings with no consequence. "Identified control deficiencies" is incomplete — say what was remediated and whether the finding recurred.
-
Omitting the industries audited. Regulated financial services and light manufacturing carry different risk universes.
-
Not naming sample sizes, materiality thresholds or the size of the entities audited, which is where audit judgement actually shows.
How the summary changes with experience
The same role, written two ways. Take whichever is closer to where you are now.
Entry level
Audit associate with two years at a mid-tier firm, working on statutory audits for owner-managed businesses with turnover between £2M and £30M. Owns cash, payables and stock cycles, and has led two smaller engagements end to end. ACCA part-qualified.
Senior
Internal audit manager with 12 years in banking, CIA and CISA certified. Owns the annual audit plan covering 40 engagements across credit and operations, manages six auditors, and led the remediation that closed a regulator-raised finding on model governance.
Certifications worth listing
Put these in their own section with the awarding body and, where one applies, the expiry date.
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) – IIA
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
- ACCA or ICAEW qualification
Questions
What should an auditor put on a resume?
Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: external audit, internal controls, sox, gaap, ifrs.
What establishes level on an auditor resume?
Qualification and progress, engagement sizes, client sectors, and the standards you work to. Then findings you raised that were accepted and acted on — a material finding is the clearest evidence of rigour available in this field.
How do I present a move from external to internal audit?
Reframe around risk and controls rather than opinion and materiality. Internal audit hires for judgement about business process, so foreground control weaknesses you identified and what the organisation changed, rather than the audit opinion you contributed to.
