Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Financial Analyst role at Beaumont Partners. I currently support a $340M business unit, covering forecasting, budgeting and capital business cases.
The work with the clearest outcome was our forecasting rebuild. The old model was account-by-account and drifted badly; I rebuilt it around operational drivers, and quarterly variance fell from 12% to 4%. It is now the model the planning cycle runs on.
The models are built in Excel and Power BI on SAP data, and they go to the finance director and two operating heads each month rather than into a folder. Knowing who reads the output changes how it is built, and I would be glad to discuss that with Beaumont Partners.

Coverage area, portfolio or budget size and the modelling scope come first. A finance director is establishing whether this is FP&A, corporate finance or investment analysis before reading further.

The forecast-accuracy figure is the strongest available proof for an analyst, because it is the one claim in financial analysis that can actually be checked after the fact.

The mistake that costs financial analysts interviews
Claiming advanced Excel. It is assumed. The variance you explained before anyone else spotted it is not.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

What makes a strong financial analyst cover letter?
Specificity about what you analyse and at what scale: revenue or budget covered, the models you own, reporting cadence, and who consumes the output. Then one accuracy or decision-impact number. Generic letters about analytical skills are indistinguishable from each other.
Should I mention Excel and SQL?
Briefly — they are assumed, and listing them signals you had nothing better to say. What differentiates is a model that changed a decision: the assumption you challenged, the variance you caught, the forecast that held up. Put the tooling on the resume.
How technical should a financial analyst cover letter be?
Technical enough to be credible, not so technical that the business reader is lost. Name the modelling you own and the decision it supported. A finance director is checking whether your models get used, and a letter that describes method without audience suggests they do not.
