I am applying for the Project Manager role at Fairmont Group. Your advert mentions delivering in a regulated environment with multiple vendors, which describes most of the last eight years of my work.
My most relevant project was a $4.2M core platform migration delivered two weeks early and 6% under budget, coordinating six vendors and thirty internal staff. The thing that made it work was an unglamorous one: a weekly risk review that everyone actually attended, which took our unplanned scope changes from fourteen a quarter to four.
I am PMP certified and would welcome the chance to talk through how I would approach your current programme.

Why each paragraph works

Budget, headcount and schedule outcome appear before anything else. A programme sponsor is calibrating whether this person has delivered at their scale, and no adjective answers that.

The recovery story is the strongest paragraph because it shows judgement under pressure rather than a successful plan. Anyone can deliver a project that goes well.

Closes on governance rather than enthusiasm — the detail a sponsor actually worries about when hiring someone to run their money.
Who reads a project manager cover letter
A programme director or the sponsor of the work. They are assessing whether you have delivered at their scale and under their kind of pressure.
What to lead with
Budget, headcount and outcome. "Delivered a £2.4M integration across four teams, three weeks early" is the whole pitch in one line.
The mistake that costs project managers interviews
Naming methodologies as if they were achievements. Agile and PRINCE2 are table stakes; what the project delivered is not.

These are the terms employers most often screen project manager applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

What makes a project manager cover letter stand out?
Numbers that establish scale: budget, headcount, duration, number of workstreams. A sponsor is deciding whether you have operated at their size, and that is a quantitative question. A letter about your methodology answers a question nobody asked.
Should I mention Agile, PRINCE2 or PMP certification?
Name the certification once, in passing — it is a screening checkbox and belongs on the resume. Do not spend a paragraph on methodology. Sponsors hire for delivered outcomes at their scale; the framework you used to get there is a detail for the interview.
How do I write a project manager letter when a project failed?
Name it plainly and say what you learned and changed. Sponsors know most portfolios contain a failure, and a candidate who can explain one clearly reads as more experienced than one whose record is uniformly successful. What loses trust is discovering it later in a reference.
