Human Resources Manager cover letter example

A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Calder Operations

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Human Resources Manager position at Calder Operations. I currently support more than four hundred employees across three sites as the sole HR manager.

The result I am most proud of is bringing voluntary turnover down from 24% to 13% over two years. It came from stay interviews rather than exit interviews — asking people why they were staying, while they were still there, and then actually fixing two of the things they named.

I have run disciplinary, grievance and redundancy processes through to completion, including two tribunal-track cases that settled before hearing, and I own employment-law compliance and policy for the site. I would welcome the opportunity to talk through the casework Calder Operations is carrying.

Sincerely,

Callum Reyes

Why each paragraph works

  1. 1

Headcount supported and the HR domain come first. Generalist HR at 80 employees and specialist HR in a 5,000-person business are different professions.

  2. 2

The retention and time-to-hire figures are the persuading paragraph, because HR is routinely hired on process improvement rather than on people skills.

  3. 3

Closes on employment-law exposure and the specific casework handled — the risk question an HR director is really asking.

Who reads a human resources manager cover letter

An HR director or the CEO in a smaller company. They are assessing judgement — you will handle their most sensitive problems.

What to lead with

A people outcome with a number: retention moved, time-to-hire cut, a restructure handled without a tribunal claim.

The mistake that costs human resources managers interviews

Writing in HR abstractions. "Business partnering" and "employee lifecycle" say nothing. What changed for the workforce?

Terms to work in naturally

These are the terms employers most often screen human resources manager applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.

  • human resources
  • employee relations
  • talent acquisition
  • hris
  • performance management
  • onboarding
  • compliance
  • compensation
  • employee engagement
  • recruitment

Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the human resources manager resume example for where they belong.

Before you send it

  • Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
  • Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
  • Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
  • Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

Human Resources Manager cover letter questions

What does an HR manager cover letter need to prove?

That you have handled the organisation size and the risk. Name headcount supported, the HR domains you own, employment-law jurisdictions you have worked in, and the hard cases you have run — grievance, disciplinary, redundancy, TUPE, tribunal. Those decide the shortlist.

How do I show people skills without sounding generic?

By outcome, not by adjective. "Reduced voluntary turnover from 24% to 11% in eighteen months by rebuilding the exit interview process and acting on it" says more about your judgement than any sentence containing the word empathetic.

How do I write an HR letter when I cannot discuss cases?

Use categories and outcomes rather than facts: number of disciplinaries or grievances handled, tribunal-track cases settled, policies rewritten, inspections cleared. None of that identifies anybody, and it demonstrates the risk-carrying capability an HR director is actually buying.
