Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Product Manager position at Northbridge Systems. I currently own a $14M ARR product line with a team of eight engineers and two designers.
The decision I would highlight is one where I removed rather than added. Two features were absorbing about a fifth of our engineering capacity and were used by under 2% of accounts. Retiring them was unpopular for a month and then invisible — and the capacity went into onboarding, where activation moved from 31% to 58%.
I work with engineering and design in the same room rather than through a backlog: discovery together, problem statements before solutions, and a roadmap they have argued with before it ships. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the role at Northbridge Systems.

Why each paragraph works

Product surface, user scale and the commercial context come first. A head of product is placing the candidate — consumer and enterprise product management differ in almost every respect.

The outcome paragraph persuades because it names a decision to NOT build something. Prioritisation under constraint is the actual job, and shipping stories alone do not evidence it.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

What should a product manager cover letter prove?
That you own outcomes rather than backlogs. Name the product, its user scale and revenue context, one decision you made against pressure, and what happened. A letter describing ceremonies and roadmaps reads as a project manager applying for a product job.
How do I break into product management from another role?
Lead with the product-shaped work you have already done — a feature you specified, a customer problem you scoped, a metric you owned — rather than with your ambition to move. Then name what you are missing and how you are closing it. Hiring managers respect a candid gap and discount an unacknowledged one.
Should a product manager letter include a product teardown or opinion?
One sentence of a genuine, informed opinion about their product is the strongest opening a PM letter can have — but only if it is right. A wrong or superficial critique of something the team has agonised over does more damage than a conventional opening would.
