At my current company I took our payments service from 300ms to 45ms median latency by replacing N+1 queries with batched loaders, then led its migration to Kubernetes across 12 services with no customer-facing downtime. That work cut deployment time from 40 minutes to 4 and ended our weekend release windows.

Why each paragraph works

Opens with the system and its latency problem rather than an introduction. An engineering manager reading fifty letters can tell from line one whether this person has run something in production.

The 300ms-to-45ms figure is the whole letter. It names the technique, the scale and the outcome, which is what makes it checkable — and a checkable claim is what separates this from every letter that says "passionate about performance".

Closes by naming what is hard about the problem rather than restating interest. It reads as an engineer who has thought about the job, not an applicant who has read the careers page.
Who reads a software engineer cover letter
Usually an engineering manager, often the person who will run your first one-to-one. They are reading for evidence you have shipped and maintained something real, not for enthusiasm about the company.
What to lead with
The system you own and its scale. "I maintain the payments service handling 40,000 requests a minute" tells them more in one line than a paragraph about your passion for clean code.
The mistake that costs software engineers interviews
Listing languages. The advert already said which stack it is; repeating it back proves nothing. Engineers are persuaded by a decision you made and what it cost or saved.
Terms to work in naturally
These are the terms employers most often screen software engineer applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

Do software engineers still need a cover letter?
For most applications through a portal, no — the resume and a link to your code do the work. Write one when there is a named hiring manager, when you are changing stack or domain, or when your resume does not explain something obvious. In those three cases it is worth more than another project on the resume.
Should I mention specific technologies in the letter?
Only inside a decision you made. "We moved to Kubernetes" is a fact the reader cannot evaluate; "we moved twelve services to Kubernetes and cut deploys from forty minutes to four" is an argument. Listing the stack back at them proves nothing they did not already write in the advert.
How long should a software engineer cover letter be?
Three short paragraphs on one screen. An engineering manager reading fifty applications gives you the first two lines and then decides whether to continue, so length works against you past about 250 words. If you cannot make the case in three paragraphs, the problem is usually that the evidence is missing rather than that the space is.
