DevOps Engineer cover letter example
A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Kestrel Digital
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the DevOps Engineer role at Kestrel Digital. I currently run production infrastructure for a platform serving around 8M monthly users.
The change with the widest effect was moving us from weekly releases to roughly forty deployments a day. The pipeline rebuild was the visible part; the part that made it safe was automated rollback and better alert routing, which took mean time to recovery from four hours to eighteen minutes.
The stack is Terraform and Kubernetes on AWS, with Jenkins pipelines and Prometheus and Grafana for alerting, and I carry a one-in-four pager with a written runbook behind every alert I own. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the role at Kestrel Digital.
Sincerely,
Ananya Deshpande
Why each paragraph works
- 1
Infrastructure scale, cloud platform and deployment frequency open the letter. A platform lead is sizing the environment before assessing anything else.
- 2
The incident and deployment-time figures do the persuading, because DevOps is judged on reliability and velocity together and both are measurable.
- 3
Closes on the toolchain and on-call model — practical facts that decide whether this person can take a pager on week two.
Who reads a devops engineer cover letter
A platform lead or head of engineering, checking whether you have carried a pager for what you built.
What to lead with
Reliability with a number. Deployment frequency, MTTR, or an incident volume you brought down.
The mistake that costs devops engineers interviews
Listing tools as a pipeline. Terraform, Kubernetes, ArgoCD — everyone lists them. What broke, and what did you change so it stopped breaking?
Terms to work in naturally
These are the terms employers most often screen devops engineer applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.
- devops
- ci/cd
- infrastructure as code
- kubernetes
- terraform
- cloud infrastructure
- automation
- monitoring
- incident response
- containerization
Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the devops engineer resume example for where they belong.
Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.
DevOps Engineer cover letter questions
What should a DevOps cover letter focus on?
Scale and reliability: number of services, cloud platform, deploy frequency, MTTR, uptime, and the size of the on-call rotation. Then one incident or migration you led with the before and after. DevOps hiring is about whether you have run something at their size without it falling over.
Should I list every tool I have used?
No. Name the platform and two or three tools that anchor your experience, then spend the space on a migration or an incident. Long toolchain lists read as exposure rather than ownership, and platform leads discount them accordingly.
Should a DevOps letter discuss on-call and incident response?
Yes, and most letters skip it. On-call rotation, incident volume and whether you have written the runbooks are precisely the practical facts that decide whether you can take a pager in week two. Comfort with being woken at 3am is part of the job description.
