I am applying for the Mechanical Engineer position at Ironvale Engineering. I have six years of product design experience in industrial equipment, working in SolidWorks to ASME Y14.5.
I have taken fourteen parts from concept through validation into production. The one I am most pleased with was a housing redesign that cut assembly time by 31% and $42 off unit cost, which came out of sitting on the assembly line for two days rather than anything clever in CAD.
I work daily in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, run FEA on load-bearing assemblies before release, and detail to ASME Y14.5 GD&T under an ISO 9001 quality system. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how that maps to the product programme at Ironvale Engineering.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

What should a mechanical engineer cover letter emphasise?
Sector and standards first — automotive, aerospace, HVAC, medical devices and heavy plant are barely interchangeable, and the codes you have worked to prove which one you know. Then design outcomes with numbers: tolerance held, weight removed, unit cost reduced, cycle time cut.
Should I list CAD software in the letter?
Name the main package once, because it is a genuine screening criterion, then move on. What earns the interview is a design decision you made and the constraint you made it under — not the tool you drew it in.
Should a mechanical engineer letter mention specific products?
Name the product category and its constraints rather than an unreleased design. "Rotating assemblies for industrial pumps to ISO 9001" tells a reader what you can do without disclosing anything. Confidentiality is respected by describing the engineering problem, not by being vague about your work.
