Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Civil Engineer position at Halden Projects. I am chartered with eight years in highways and drainage design, currently lead designer on schemes up to $30M.
The contribution I am proudest of came at design review rather than in the original concept. Realigning the drainage on one scheme took $1.8M out of the construction cost, and it only surfaced because I insisted on walking the site again after the topographical survey was updated.
I design to current highway and drainage standards, work in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, and I am working towards chartership with my professional review already scheduled. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the role at Halden Projects.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

What should a civil engineer cover letter emphasise?
Discipline and sector, project types and contract values, design codes and standards you work to, chartership status or progress, and software. Then one project that was actually constructed — designs that never left the drawing are the standard weakness in these letters.
How important is chartered status?
For senior and design-approval roles it is often a hard requirement, and it should appear in the first paragraph either way. If you are working towards CEng, IEng or PE, say which stage you have reached — employers plan around it and an unstated position is read as no position.
Should a civil engineer letter mention chartership progress?
Yes, with the stage — registered, professional review scheduled, or working towards. For design roles that carry a signature it changes what you are permitted to do, so an unclear status is read as not held. In-progress status stated plainly is entirely normal and routinely accepted.
