Accountant cover letter example

A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Ashcroft Financial

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to apply for the Accountant position at Ashcroft Financial. I have six years of month-end close and financial reporting experience under US GAAP, and I am currently working toward CPA licensure.

In my current role I rebuilt our accruals and reconciliation workflow, which took month-end close from ten days to five. I also led our general ledger migration to SAP across a three-entity consolidation covering $80M in annual revenue, and we have gone three consecutive audits with no material findings.

Our last two external audits closed with no adjustments and no management letter points, which is the closest thing an accountant has to a reference. I work in SAP and QuickBooks day to day, and I would welcome the chance to bring that close discipline to Ashcroft Financial.

Sincerely,

Sneha Iyer

Why each paragraph works

  1. 1

Opens with qualification, ledger size and reporting cycle. A financial controller is checking whether this person has closed books at their complexity before reading anything else.

  2. 2

The close-time improvement is concrete and verifiable, and it names the control that made it possible rather than claiming efficiency in the abstract.

  3. 3

Ends on audit outcome. For an accountant that is the strongest available proof, because it is a third party confirming the work.

Who reads an accountant cover letter

A finance manager or partner. They are checking qualification status and the kind of books you have actually closed.

What to lead with

Qualification and the scale of the ledger. "ACCA-qualified, month-end close for a £40M turnover group" places you immediately.

The mistake that costs accountants interviews

Claiming to be detail-oriented in a letter with a typo in it. In this field, the letter itself is the evidence — proofread it twice.

Terms to work in naturally

These are the terms employers most often screen accountant applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.

  • general ledger
  • month end close
  • financial reporting
  • gaap
  • reconciliation
  • accounts payable
  • accounts receivable
  • audit
  • erp
  • variance analysis

Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the accountant resume example for where they belong.

Before you send it

  • Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
  • Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
  • Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
  • Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

Accountant cover letter questions

What should an accountant cover letter focus on?

The scale and complexity of what you have closed: entity count, ledger size, reporting cycle, standards you report under, and audit outcomes. Controllers are hiring for reliability under a deadline, and every one of those is evidence of it.

Do I need to mention my qualification in the letter?

Yes, in the first line — CPA, ACCA, CA, CIMA or part-qualified with the stage you have reached. It is a hard screening criterion in most accounting roles, and leaving the reader to hunt for it on the resume costs you nothing but risks everything.

Should an accountant mention software in the cover letter?

Name the ERP once — SAP, Oracle, Tally or QuickBooks — because it materially affects ramp-up time and controllers screen for it. Beyond that, the space is better spent on close timelines, reconciliations and audit outcomes, which is where an accountant is actually judged.
