Social Media Manager resume example

Social media resumes need to separate vanity from value. Follower counts are the weakest number you can lead with; reach, engagement rate, referral traffic and revenue attributed to social are what a reviewer actually wants. Say which platforms you own and how much you produced yourself.

Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.

Bullet points that work

Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.

Tips specific to this role

  1. 1

Lead with engagement rate or referral revenue, not follower count. Reviewers discount follower numbers heavily.

  2. 2

Say what you made yourself versus what you briefed out. It changes the job entirely.

  3. 3

Include one crisis or negative-sentiment example. It is the part of the role people quietly worry about.

Mistakes to avoid on a social media manager resume

  • Follower counts with no business outcome. Audience size is the vanity metric; reach, engagement rate, traffic and revenue are the ones read seriously.

  • No mention of which platforms you actually ran. TikTok, LinkedIn and Instagram demand different formats and cadences.

  • Omitting whether you created the content or commissioned it. Both are legitimate; conflating them is not.

  • Leaving out community and crisis handling, which is the part of the job that carries real risk.

How the summary changes with experience

The same role, written two ways. Take whichever is closer to where you are now.

Entry level

Social media executive with two years running Instagram and TikTok for a DTC skincare brand, growing the TikTok account from 3k to 61k followers in a year and driving a 12% share of new-customer sessions through organic social.

Senior

Social media manager with 9 years, owning strategy across six platforms for a national retailer with 1.4M combined followers. Manages a team of four and a £400k content budget, and led the response protocol used through a product recall.

Questions

What should a social media manager put on a resume?

Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: social media management, content strategy, community management, engagement rate, paid social.

Are follower counts worth putting on a resume?

They are the most easily inflated metric in marketing and the most heavily discounted. Engagement rate, growth within a target segment, and social-attributed revenue or pipeline carry far more weight. Give audience size as context, not as the headline.

How do I show I can handle a brand safely?

Name approval workflows you have worked within and any incident you managed — a negative thread, a mistimed post, a product issue surfacing publicly. Brands hire for crisis reliability at least as much as for creative output, and few resumes address it.
