Summary example
HR manager supporting 400+ employees across 3 sites. Cut voluntary turnover from 24% to 13% in two years and reduced time-to-hire from 52 days to 29. Experienced across employee relations, compensation review and multi-state compliance.
Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.
Bullet points that work
Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.
- Reduced voluntary turnover from 24% to 13% over two years through stay interviews and a revised onboarding programme.
- Cut average time-to-hire from 52 days to 29 by restructuring the interview process and adding a scorecard.
- Supported 400+ employees across 3 sites as the sole HR manager.
- Led the compensation benchmarking review that corrected 34 out-of-band salaries within budget.
- Managed 40+ employee relations cases with no resulting legal claims.
- Implemented Workday HRIS across the organisation, migrating 400 employee records with no data loss.
Tips specific to this role
- 1
State the headcount you support. It is the clearest measure of HR scope.
- 2
Name the HRIS — Workday, BambooHR, SAP SuccessFactors. Frequently a hard requirement.
- 3
Turnover and time-to-hire are the two metrics every HR hiring manager understands instantly.
Mistakes to avoid on a human resources manager resume
-
No headcount. The size of the population you support is the single most useful number on an HR resume and it is usually missing.
-
Listing HR functions rather than problems solved. Everyone in HR runs onboarding — say what your onboarding changed about retention or time-to-productivity.
-
Avoiding the difficult work. Redundancies, grievances, tribunals and investigations are the parts that demonstrate judgement; a resume with none reads as junior.
-
No HRIS named. Workday, BambooHR and a spreadsheet imply very different organisations.
How the summary changes with experience
The same role, written two ways. Take whichever is closer to where you are now.
Entry level
HR advisor with two years supporting a 180-person population across two sites. Runs the full recruitment cycle for volume hiring, manages onboarding in BambooHR, and handles first-stage employee relations casework. Working toward CIPD Level 5.
Senior
HR manager with 12 years, CIPD Level 7, supporting 900 employees across three countries. Led the restructure that reduced headcount by 60 roles with no successful tribunal claims, and rebuilt the performance framework now used company-wide. Manages a team of five.
Certifications worth listing
Put these in their own section with the awarding body and, where one applies, the expiry date.
- SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)
- CIPD Level 5 or Level 7
- HRCI Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
Questions
What should a human resources manager put on a resume?
Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: human resources, employee relations, talent acquisition, hris, performance management.
What proves seniority on an HR resume?
Headcount supported, the HR domains you own end to end, employment-law jurisdictions, and the hard casework you have run — grievance, disciplinary, redundancy, TUPE, tribunal. Those establish level far better than a title, which varies wildly between organisations.
How do I evidence people skills without generic phrasing?
By outcome. "Cut voluntary turnover from 24% to 11% in 18 months by rebuilding exit interviews and acting on the findings" demonstrates judgement. Any sentence describing yourself as approachable or empathetic is discounted on sight, because everyone writes it.
