Content Writer cover letter example

A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Atlas Creative

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Content Writer position at Atlas Creative. I currently publish twelve to sixteen long-form pieces a month for a B2B SaaS product.

The work with the clearest result was not new writing at all. Sixty legacy articles were ranking on page two and had been abandoned; rewriting them around what the searcher actually wanted lifted their combined traffic by 210% — more than any new piece I published that quarter.

Three samples are linked on my resume. I would welcome the chance to discuss the role.

Sincerely,

Kavya Subramanian

Why each paragraph works

  1. 1

Portfolio, subject areas and publication context lead. The letter is itself a writing sample, so its first paragraph carries a double burden.

  2. 2

The traffic and conversion paragraph persuades because content hiring has moved decisively from craft claims to commercial outcomes.

  3. 3

Closes on SEO practice, CMS and editorial process — the operational facts that separate a writer from a freelancer with clippings.

Who reads a content writer cover letter

A content or marketing lead who will judge the letter itself as a writing sample — because it is one.

What to lead with

A piece that performed, with the number. Traffic, ranking or conversion attached to something you wrote.

The mistake that costs content writers interviews

Writing a letter that is not itself good writing. In this one field the letter is the portfolio piece. Cliché in the opening line ends the application.

Terms to work in naturally

These are the terms employers most often screen content writer applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.

  • content writing
  • seo
  • copywriting
  • content strategy
  • keyword research
  • editorial
  • blog
  • long form content
  • editing
  • content marketing

Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the content writer resume example for where they belong.

Before you send it

  • Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
  • Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
  • Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
  • Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

Content Writer cover letter questions

How important is the cover letter for a writing job?

More than in any other field — it is the only unedited sample the employer sees, and it is read as one whether or not you intend it. A generic letter for a writing role is disqualifying in a way it would not be elsewhere.

What results should a content writer show?

Organic traffic growth, keyword rankings achieved, conversion or lead numbers from specific pieces, and publication volume at quality. Content hiring is commercial now — a portfolio of well-written pieces with no performance data loses to a weaker portfolio with results.

Should a content writer link samples in the cover letter?

Yes, and choose three that match the work advertised rather than your three favourites. An editor is assessing range against a specific need. Say in one line what each demonstrates, because an unlabelled list of links asks the reader to do work you should have done.
