Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the UX Designer position at Mercer & Fox. I am currently the sole designer on a platform serving around 200,000 monthly users.
The project I would point to is our checkout. Abandonment sat at 68% and everyone had a theory; five rounds of testing showed the problem was a shipping estimate that only appeared after the address step. Fixing the sequence, not the visual design, brought abandonment to 41%.

Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.
UX Designer cover letter questions
What should a UX designer cover letter say that the portfolio does not?
Constraints, your specific role in team projects, and the decisions that did not make the case study. A portfolio shows outcomes; the letter explains the negotiation, the research that changed direction, and what you would do differently. Keep it to three paragraphs.
Should I include research methods?
One or two, tied to a decision they produced. Listing every method you know reads as coursework. "Five usability sessions killed the onboarding flow we had already built" proves competence and judgement in one sentence.
How much of a UX letter should be about process?
Enough to show you have one, not enough to recite a methodology. Name the research you ran and the decision it changed. A design lead has read a hundred letters describing double-diamond and none of them distinguished the writer; a research finding that overturned an assumption does.
