Summary example

Licensed secondary mathematics teacher with 7 years in Title I schools. Raised Algebra I proficiency from 54% to 79% over three years and built the peer tutoring programme now running school-wide. Known for keeping struggling students in the room and engaged.

Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.

Bullet points that work

Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.

  • Raised Algebra I state proficiency from 54% to 79% across three cohorts of roughly 120 students each.
  • Built and ran a peer tutoring programme now serving 90+ students weekly across the mathematics department.

Tips specific to this role

  1. 1

Put your licence area and state in the top third. Districts filter on it first.

  2. 2

Give growth data with the starting point: "54% to 79%" is credible, "improved scores" is not.

  3. 3

Include the grade levels and subjects explicitly — administrators search by them.

Mistakes to avoid on a teacher resume

  • No grade level or subject in the summary. "Experienced educator" forces the reader to hunt for the two facts that decide whether you fit the vacancy.

  • Leaving out class size and school context. Thirty-two students in a mixed-ability comprehensive is a different job from twelve in a selective setting.

  • Listing responsibilities every teacher has. Planning lessons and marking work is the baseline — what changed because you were the one doing it?

  • Omitting your certification and the jurisdiction that issued it. Teaching licences do not transfer automatically between states or countries.

How the summary changes with experience

The same role, written two ways. Take whichever is closer to where you are now.

Entry level

Newly qualified secondary mathematics teacher with QTS and a PGCE, completing two placements across Key Stages 3 and 4 with classes of up to 30. Ran a Year 9 intervention group that moved 8 of 11 students up a grade boundary by the summer assessment.

Senior

Head of Mathematics with 15 years teaching and 6 leading a department of nine. Rewrote the Key Stage 4 scheme of work and raised the proportion of students achieving grade 5 or above from 54% to 71% across three cohorts. Mentors trainees and moderates coursework for the local authority.

Certifications worth listing

Put these in their own section with the awarding body and, where one applies, the expiry date.

  • State Teaching Licence / Certification (name the state and subject endorsement)
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – England
  • National Board Certification
  • TEFL / CELTA for English language teaching

Questions

What should a teacher put on a resume?

Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: lesson planning, classroom management, curriculum, differentiated instruction, student achievement.

Should a teaching resume include attainment data?

Yes, and its absence is noticed. Progress measures, exam outcomes against target, and intervention results are the currency of teaching applications. Anonymise where you must, but give the reader something measurable — heads compare candidates on it.

How do I handle a resume across different key stages or curricula?

Lead with the phase and curriculum the post actually wants and let the rest sit as breadth below it. Range is an asset only once fit is established; a resume that reads as equally weighted across three key stages leaves the reader unsure what you are.
