Graphic Designer resume example

Your portfolio gets you the interview; your resume gets your portfolio opened. Keep the resume itself clean and readable — a designer whose resume is unreadable has already failed the brief.

Summary example

Graphic designer with 5 years across brand and digital. Led the rebrand that lifted campaign click-through by 34% and built the design system now used across 40+ marketing assets. Equally comfortable with a brand book and a deadline.

Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.

Bullet points that work

Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.

Tips specific to this role

  1. 1

Put your portfolio URL in the contact line. Missing it is the most common mistake in this field.

  2. 2

Resist a heavily designed resume for large employers — the parser will mangle it. Use a clean single column and let the portfolio carry the visual case.

  3. 3

Name the software versions and formats you actually deliver in.

Mistakes to avoid on a graphic designer resume

  • No portfolio link, or one that needs a password. The resume exists to get the portfolio opened; without a working URL it has failed before it is read.

  • Designing the resume so heavily that an ATS cannot parse it. Multi-column art directions and text inside images are exactly what gets dropped — keep a plain parseable version for applications.

  • Listing the Adobe suite as a skill. It is assumed. What is not assumed is brand systems, print production, motion, or design tokens.

  • No mention of what the work was for. A beautiful poster for a real client with a real constraint beats an unbriefed personal piece every time.

Questions

What should a graphic designer put on a resume?

Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: graphic design, brand identity, adobe creative suite, typography, layout.

Does a graphic designer resume matter if I have a portfolio?

It does a job the portfolio cannot: scale, clients, your actual role in team projects, and the constraints you worked under. A studio needs to know whether you art directed the campaign or produced someone else’s layout, and images do not say.

Should my resume itself be heavily designed?

It should be well designed and still readable by software. A resume that is a demonstration piece often fails the parser and irritates a reviewer scanning fifty of them. Show restraint here and ambition in the portfolio — that contrast reads as judgement.
