Data Analyst resume example
A data analyst resume has to prove two things at once: that you can get the number right, and that someone acted on it. Analysts who only show tools get filtered out; analysts who show decisions get interviews.

Summary example
Data analyst with 6 years turning messy operational data into decisions leadership acts on. Built the reporting layer three teams now run on and cut month-end close from 9 days to 2. Comfortable owning a question from raw SQL through to the recommendation.
Notice the shape: years of experience, then one specific result with a number in it, then what you are known for. Three sentences is enough.
Bullet points that work
Adapt these to work you have genuinely done — the numbers must be yours.
- Rebuilt the demand forecasting model in Python, reducing forecast error by 23% and freeing $1.4M in held inventory.
- Designed the company-wide Power BI reporting layer now used daily by 3 departments and 40+ staff.
- Automated month-end reconciliation with SQL and Airflow, cutting close time from 9 days to 2.
- Ran the A/B testing programme across 14 locations, identifying a change worth $600K in annual revenue.
- Replaced 30+ manual Excel reports with one self-serve dashboard, saving roughly 20 analyst hours weekly.
- Presented quarterly findings to the executive team, translating model output into three concrete actions.
Tips specific to this role
- 1
Every bullet should end in a decision or a number. "Built a dashboard" is invisible; "built the dashboard that moved reorder point decisions from weekly to daily" is not.
- 2
Name the tools in the exact form the advert uses — "Power BI", not "PowerBI".
- 3
One line on stakeholder work beats three lines of tool names.
Mistakes to avoid on a data analyst resume
-
Naming tools instead of decisions. "Proficient in SQL, Tableau, Excel" says nothing — the job is changing what the business does, so say which decision your analysis changed.
-
Dashboards with no consequence. "Built 15 dashboards" invites the question nobody wants asked: did anyone use them? Name the one that got used and what it stopped or started.
-
Leaving out the data size and source. Analysing a 500-row spreadsheet and a 200M-row warehouse table are different skills.
-
Burying the statistics. If you ran a significance test, a cohort analysis or a regression, name it — that is the line separating an analyst from a reporter.
How the summary changes with experience
The same role, written two ways. Take whichever is closer to where you are now.
Entry level
Data analyst with a statistics degree and one year supporting a retail merchandising team. Rebuilt the weekly sales report in SQL and Power BI, cutting its preparation from six hours to twenty minutes. Comfortable with joins, window functions and explaining a result to someone who does not want the method.
Senior
Analytics lead with 9 years in subscription businesses. Built the churn model the retention team now works from, which identified the billing-failure cohort behind 31% of cancellations. Manages three analysts and owns the metric definitions the executive team reports on.
Certifications worth listing
Put these in their own section with the awarding body and, where one applies, the expiry date.
- Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
- Tableau Desktop Specialist
Questions
What should a data analyst put on a resume?
Lead with a summary that names your years of experience and your single strongest result. Then work experience with one measurable achievement per bullet, followed by skills using the exact terms from the job advert. For this role, employers screen most often for: data analysis, sql, data visualization, reporting, kpi.
How do I show impact when my analysis just informed a decision?
Name the decision and its consequence. "Analysis of churn by cohort led the team to drop the annual plan, recovering £180K in retained revenue" is impact. Analysts routinely undersell themselves by describing the query rather than what the business did next.
Do I need a portfolio as a data analyst?
It helps most when your commercial experience is thin. Two or three analyses with a real question, a visible method and a clear recommendation carry more weight than a dashboard gallery. If you have several years of commercial work, the resume is sufficient.
