Sales Representative cover letter example
A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Arcadia Solutions
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Sales Representative position at Arcadia Solutions. I have spent five years selling B2B SaaS and have averaged 118% of quota over the last four.
In my current territory I grew annual revenue from $1.1M to $2.7M, largely through outbound, and closed the largest deal in company history at $480K. The change that moved the number most was restructuring our discovery call, which took the average cycle from 94 days to 61 and is now the team standard.
I would welcome the chance to talk about your territory and what the first ninety days would look like.
Sincerely,
Owen Carmichael
Why each paragraph works
- 1
Quota attainment is in the first sentence, with the number and the period. A sales director who has to read past line three to find it has already learned something about the applicant.
- 2
Deal size, cycle length and territory establish whether this is the right kind of selling. A closer in transactional retail and a closer in enterprise are not interchangeable.
- 3
Closes by asking for the conversation. In sales, a letter that does not close is a demonstration of the problem.
Who reads a sales representative cover letter
A sales manager who is, professionally, being sold to. They will notice whether you can open.
What to lead with
Quota attainment. "142% of a £1.2M target, two years running" is the only opening line this role needs.
The mistake that costs sales representatives interviews
Describing yourself as a people person. Your letter is a sales call — if it does not lead with a number and ask for the meeting, it has failed a live test.
Terms to work in naturally
These are the terms employers most often screen sales representative applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.
- quota
- pipeline
- crm
- salesforce
- b2b sales
- lead generation
- account management
- negotiation
- revenue growth
- prospecting
Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the sales representative resume example for where they belong.
Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.
Sales Representative cover letter questions
What numbers should a sales cover letter include?
Quota attainment as a percentage, the period it covers, average deal size, sales cycle length and territory or segment. Those five let a director place you instantly. A sales letter without numbers is read as a sales person who does not track their own.
How do I write a sales letter if I missed quota last year?
Use a period where you hit it and be specific about the period, or lead with a different metric you genuinely own — pipeline generated, new logos, retention. Do not inflate the figure; sales interviews test claims early, and a number that collapses ends the process on the spot.
Should I mention my current earnings in a sales cover letter?
No, unless the advert asks. Commission structures differ so much that a number without its plan is unreadable, and volunteering it anchors the conversation before they have seen your attainment. Lead with revenue against target instead, which is comparable across companies.
