Registered Nurse cover letter example

A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Meridian Health

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Registered Nurse position on your medical-surgical unit at Meridian Health. I hold an active RN licence and BSN, with seven years of acute care experience.

Most of that time has been on a busy step-down floor carrying six-patient assignments. I have precepted fourteen new graduates, and I sat on the practice council whose catheter protocol change cut our CAUTI rate by 40% over eighteen months. Teaching and protocol work are the parts of nursing I want to keep growing into.

I would be glad to discuss how I could contribute to your unit, and I can make myself available for an interview at short notice.

Sincerely,

Ananya Deshpande

Why each paragraph works

  1. 1

Licence, specialty and unit size are in the first sentence. A nurse manager reading between shifts is screening for exactly those three facts, and a letter that buries them gets set aside unread.

  2. 2

Patient ratio and acuity do the persuading. They translate directly into whether this nurse can hold the assignment on that unit, which is the only real question.

  3. 3

Names shift availability and the charting system. Both are practical blockers that decide interviews, and answering them unprompted removes two reasons to pass.

Who reads a registered nurse cover letter

A nurse manager or charge nurse, frequently between shifts. They check licence, specialty and setting first — everything else is read only if those three fit.

What to lead with

Licence, specialty and unit type in the first sentence. "RN, BSN, four years in a 32-bed medical-surgical unit" answers the screening questions before they have to ask.

The mistake that costs registered nurses interviews

Leading with compassion. Every applicant says it, so it distinguishes nobody. Patient ratios, acuity and the systems you have charted in do.

Terms to work in naturally

These are the terms employers most often screen registered nurse applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.

  • registered nurse
  • patient care
  • bls
  • acls
  • electronic health records
  • medication administration
  • patient assessment
  • care coordination
  • hipaa
  • clinical documentation

Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the registered nurse resume example for where they belong.

Before you send it

  • Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
  • Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
  • Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
  • Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.

Registered Nurse cover letter questions

What should a registered nurse cover letter include?

Licence and state, specialty, unit type and bed count, typical patient ratio, EHR systems you have charted in, and shift availability. Those are the facts a nurse manager screens on. Everything else — including why you became a nurse — competes for space with information that actually decides the interview.

How do I write a nursing cover letter as a new graduate?

Lead with licence status and your clinical rotations by setting and bed count, exactly as you would lead with employment. Name the acuity you have worked at and the systems you charted in. A new-graduate letter fails when it substitutes enthusiasm for specifics, not when it lacks experience.

Should I mention agency or bank shifts in a nursing letter?

Yes — they demonstrate breadth across units and the ability to walk into an unfamiliar ward and work safely, which is exactly what a nurse manager values. State the settings and acuity rather than the agency, and make clear whether you are seeking permanent hours.
