Paralegal cover letter example
A complete letter — not a template with blanks in it. Read it, then replace the evidence with your own. The structure is what matters.

Hiring Manager
Whitcombe & Hale
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Paralegal position at Whitcombe & Hale. I have six years in commercial litigation and currently support three fee earners across around sixty active matters.
The part of the job I am strongest at is disclosure. I have run exercises of up to forty thousand documents in Relativity, and standardising how we index bundles cut preparation time across the team by about 40% — which mattered most in the weeks where three matters listed at once.
I work in Relativity for e-disclosure and in our case management system day to day, and I draft witness statements, chronologies and trial bundles to a standard that reaches counsel with minimal amendment. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the role at Whitcombe & Hale.
Sincerely,
Ritu Malhotra
Why each paragraph works
- 1
Practice area, firm type and matter volume open the letter. Litigation, conveyancing and corporate paralegal work share a title and little else.
- 2
The caseload and turnaround figures persuade because paralegal work is capacity-driven and a supervising solicitor is assessing throughput.
- 3
Closes on the case management systems and the specific documents drafted — the practical competence that decides supervision load.
Who reads a paralegal cover letter
A supervising solicitor or practice manager, checking practice area and case volume.
What to lead with
Practice area and caseload. "Personal injury, 60 active files, own caseload under supervision".
The mistake that costs paralegals interviews
Being generic about practice area. Firms hire for the exact area they are busy in — conveyancing experience does not read as litigation experience.
Terms to work in naturally
These are the terms employers most often screen paralegal applications for. Use the ones that are genuinely true of you — a letter stuffed with keywords reads as a letter stuffed with keywords.
- paralegal
- litigation support
- legal research
- document review
- case management
- e-disclosure
- court filing
- trial preparation
- legal drafting
- bundles
Your resume needs them more than the letter does — see the paralegal resume example for where they belong.
Before you send it
- Replace every number with one that is genuinely yours. A borrowed achievement collapses at interview.
- Find the hiring manager’s name if you can — two minutes on LinkedIn is usually enough.
- Check the company name appears correctly. Sending a letter with the previous employer’s name in it is the most common fatal error.
- Keep it to one page. If it runs over, cut the second half of paragraph two.
Paralegal cover letter questions
What should a paralegal cover letter emphasise?
Practice area first, since it is the main filter, then matter volume and value, documents you draft unsupervised, court or filing procedures you handle, and your case management system. Supervising solicitors hire for how much they will need to check.
Do I need a law degree to work as a paralegal?
Not usually, though many paralegals hold one. Employers weigh practice-area experience and procedural competence heavily, so if you lack the degree, lead with matters handled, documents drafted and systems used, and name any paralegal certification you hold or are working towards.
Should a paralegal letter name the practice area first?
Always. Firms recruit for a specific area, and conveyancing experience does not read as litigation experience to a supervising solicitor. Name the area, the level of supervision you work at and the case management system, and the rest of the letter will be read in the right frame.
